THE CHALLENGE
A milestone moment that needed to be preserved, and shared.
The Pathways to Shipbuilding for People of African Descent project was nearing its conclusion. It had been a significant achievement, connecting community members with career opportunities in one of Nova Scotia’s most storied industries, in partnership with Irving Shipbuilding and NSCC.
AEA needed a way to document the journey, honor the participants, and create a lasting record of the collaboration’s impact. Something that could be shared with funders, partners, and the broader community, and that would stand as a legacy piece for years to come.
THE STRATEGY
Documentary as legacy. Story as evidence of impact.
Joyeoux was contracted to produce a 3 to 5 minute documentary and a printed photo story book, two formats designed for different audiences and different moments. The documentary for broad sharing and emotional resonance. The photo book as a tangible, archival record.
We developed a full production plan, including timeline, budget, and logistics, and coordinated directly with Irving Shipbuilding to secure access to the Halifax Shipyard for on-site filming. B-roll was captured across the Welding Workshop and Assembly Hall, and interviews were conducted with both a program participant and an Irving Shipbuilding staff member, capturing the project from both sides of the partnership.
Every production decision was made with the dignity of the participants in mind. These were real people whose lives had been changed by this program. The film needed to honor that, not simply document it.
THE OUTCOME
A story worth telling, told well.
The documentary and photo story book gave AEA a powerful set of storytelling assets at the close of a significant program. The coordination with a major external partner was achieved without friction, the production schedule was executed as planned, and the resulting work served as both a celebration of what was accomplished and a compelling case for future investment.
